Cloacina, Goddess of Sewers: A time of Sacred Curiosity for life’s Necessary Filth
Presenter: Rev. Valerie Langston Brettillo
Cloacina is calling. Let us listen.
Cloacina Maxima: Goddess of Rome’s ancient sewer system and aqueducts.
Cloacina is asking us to consider…
… the ways we respect the deepest/grossest stages in the
Cycles of Life-Death-Rebirth…
…and the consequences of the many ways we do not typically do so.
What are the consequences to our bodies? Our Whole-selves? Our communities? Our planet?
Let us gather to learn from Cloacina. To listen to her wisdom. And, to then, go within.
In addition to learning about Cloacina Maxima,
you are invited to participate in a small, personal ritual
for opening to a path with her as a guardian Goddess.
A path with a balance of filthy and of clean.
Of thoughtful structure and embraced non-structure.
A path of fully honoring all phases of the Cycles of Birth-Death-Rebirth.
Of honoring life.
In preparation of the ritual, please bring with you to this session (although this isn’t required):
- A) 3 bowls (small mixing bowl sized).
-2 of the bowls ~halfway filled with clean water.
-1 bowl ~halfway filled with dirt, sand, or dried plant-life, such as flowers, herbs, flour, or oatmeal.
- B) something with a pleasing smell.
-such as perfume, scented lotion or candle (and a match), fruit, or incense.
- C) a hand towel
- D) paper and pencil
- E) a space to sit, which will allow for a short time free of distractions
May you be in balance.
May we all be.
